{"id":43,"date":"2008-03-28T10:44:50","date_gmt":"2008-03-28T09:44:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uhlfelder.com\/blog\/?p=43"},"modified":"2008-04-11T10:32:55","modified_gmt":"2008-04-11T09:32:55","slug":"week-32-march-27-to-april-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uhlfelder.com\/?p=43","title":{"rendered":"Week 32 &#8212; March 27 to April 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><u>March 27, 2008<\/u>.\u00a0 All quiet on the Uhlfelder front.\u00a0 The dog continues his vacation so we&#8217;re enjoying a clean house without the pitter patter of little needy feet.<\/p>\n<p><u>March 28, 2008<\/u>.\u00a0\u00a0 Back to Starbucks, which I was boycotting for a while &#8212; well, actually I just didn&#8217;t have a chance to go there as regularly as before our ski break.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t seem to get the coffee homebrewed here to anywhere near drinkable so I guess I&#8217;ll lift the boycott for a while but make it an every-few-days boycott.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><u>March 29, 2008<\/u>.\u00a0 Our website is down today for some service.\u00a0 I hate to lose so many visits, well probably none.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>David had a soccer game today, and his team won by 20 points or something.\u00a0 Luckily they played what looked like 4-year-olds.\u00a0 It worked out since they usually lose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The weather is very dreary today and has been really since we got back from skiing and France last week.\u00a0 It&#8217;s got Anne really down, plus she has the shits.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/uhlfelder.com\/blog\/imagesblog\/Rocketback\/index.html\">dog got back <\/a>from his vacation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><u>March 30, 2008<\/u>.\u00a0 We went off to visit Montserrat today, about 30 miles from Barcelona.\u00a0 It&#8217;s basically a tourist site occupied by a retired monestary but has some very nice hikes and really great rock climbing.\u00a0 Getting anywhere around here is a mystery since the roads are either poorly marked or marked with numbers that don&#8217;t correspond to maps or have changed their numbering.\u00a0\u00a0 You just take your best shot and get there after a while, hopefully not too long.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, the area has some very interesting rock formations and as a result was littered with rock climbers, some of whom were walking around with harnasses on looking very self important.\u00a0 I, for one, was not impressed.\u00a0 We had wondered where the athletic people of Barcelona go and I guess many go here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The hiking was good, with lots of uphills and downhills and interesting trails that ranged from concrete to dirt.\u00a0 The weather was crazy and ranged from cold and humid to hot and humid and super windy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As we were <a href=\"https:\/\/uhlfelder.com\/blog\/imagesblog\/Montserrat\/index.html\">self-importantly hiking<\/a>, the boys speculated on why people climb.\u00a0 They noted\u00a0 there are no prizes to get, no trophies really and it&#8217;s very dangerous.\u00a0 I mentioned that the one trophy available is a headstone.\u00a0\u00a0David laughed totally getting my joke and it occurred to us that he knew what a headstone was after reading Harry Potter books.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><u>March 31, 2008<\/u>.\u00a0 Anne and I went to a lunch place today and were shocked to be served, eat and pay in 25 minutes.\u00a0 It has to be a Spanish record for a meal, and we&#8217;re currently investigating that with friends.\u00a0 Anything under an hour is fast.<\/p>\n<p><u>April 1, 2008<\/u>.\u00a0 April fools day is not celebrated here, except with David and Joshua who ran around with underwear on their heads.\u00a0 Hmmm.\u00a0 I guess that&#8217;s good enough.\u00a0\u00a0This funny article appeared in the Aspen Daily News:<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"90%\" cellPadding=\"3\" cellSpacing=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td width=\"80%\" vAlign=\"top\">\n<p align=\"justify\"><span class=\"abody\"><strong><br \/>\n\u00a0By Mademoiselle Slutz<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"abody\"><br \/>\n\u00a0Aspen Daily News Ho Ho Ho<\/span><span class=\"abody\"><br \/>\n\u00a0 This season\u2019s record-breaking snow\u00adfall appears to have had some unin\u00adtended consequences.<br \/>\n\u00a0 Large piles of snow melting around town have revealed the usual dog feces, gum wrappers and other detritus. This season, however, slowly emerging from various snow piles on Red Mountain, Starwood and other tony neighborhoods were the bodies of 10 local Realtors.<br \/>\n\u00a0 \u201c We didn\u2019t even notice they were missing,\u201d said Aspen Board of Real\u00adtors President Ramrod Wolf- ly, adding that the Basalt- based Aspen board has over 600 members and represents over 175 real estate offices. \u201c How are we supposed to know if 10 don\u2019t show up at work? All we care about is our num\u00adbers. Did you know that price per square foot in the Aspen area is at an all time high?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0 Baring sharp teeth dripping with saliva, Wolf- ly added, \u201c Anyway, there\u2019s more where that came from.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0 Investigations revealed that all but one of the dirt pimps died of asphyxi\u00adation when they got stuck in the snow near the monster homes they were show\u00ading \u2014 unable to find help since no one was home anywhere, they simply got stranded.<br \/>\n\u00a0 One died of carbon monoxide poi\u00adsoning while sitting in her SUV talk\u00ading on her cell phone \u2014 apparently she lost track of time while her car got com\u00adpletely covered with snow during one of December\u2019s epic storm cycles. In fact, locals looking for unusual lines to ski this season used the buried Escalade as a jump while ripping Red Mountain.<br \/>\n\u00a0 \u201c That line was just sick, brah,\u201d said local extreme skier Chris Davenport, adding that if he\u2019d known there was a dead Realtor inside, he would not have<\/span><span class=\"abody\"> done it. \u201c My condolences.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0 The 10 dead Realtors collectively represented $ 1 billion in real estate sales last year in Pitkin County.<br \/>\n\u00a0 Even without them, however, this year\u2019s sales continue to show the strength and resilience of the Aspen market, said Wolf- ly. As an example he pointed to sales above the $ 20 million mark, which are doing just fine, he said, even while everything else is tanking.<br \/>\n\u00a0 \u201c It\u2019s a buyer\u2019s market,\u201d he said, as he shouldered his skis and headed towards the gondola, noting that he\u2019s expecting to close on two more deals during the 15- minute ride.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>Finally the weather is improved enough that I can get on my bike for a more or less comfortable ride to Moulins de Rei, my usual ride that is about 30 kilometers and takes about 1:40.\u00a0 Lots of climbing with some nice descents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><u>April 2, 2008<\/u>.\u00a0 We decided to go to <a href=\"https:\/\/uhlfelder.com\/blog\/imagesblog\/Tibidabo\/index.html\">Tibidabo amusement park today <\/a>since the kids had a half-day of school.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it wasn&#8217;t fully open (only on week-ends) but the boys and Anne went on a few rides and we saw some museum, more or less, of working amusements.\u00a0\u00a0 We&#8217;re off to London this coming week-end for our friend Sam&#8217;s son (Asher&#8217;s) barmitzvah.\u00a0 It should be fun; snow is forecast in London, the world&#8217;s most expensive city.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March 27, 2008.\u00a0 All quiet on the Uhlfelder front.\u00a0 The dog continues his vacation so we&#8217;re enjoying a clean house without the pitter patter of little needy feet.
