{"id":17,"date":"2007-11-17T21:10:11","date_gmt":"2007-11-17T20:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uhlfelder.com\/blog\/?p=17"},"modified":"2007-11-21T09:18:53","modified_gmt":"2007-11-21T08:18:53","slug":"week-13-november-14-to-november-20","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uhlfelder.com\/?p=17","title":{"rendered":"Week 13 &#8212; November 14 to November 20"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><u>November 14, 2007<\/u>.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Went to Starbucks with Anne, then Anne went to Class.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I went on a huge 1:40 run through the hills and dales.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It was nice except I got home and consumed everything in sight.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I took David to soccer practice and hung out with the Spanish soccer moms.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>They are not well traveled, and pretty nice and curious about my situation (are you single, want to fool around) no, no \u2013 I mean, why are you here?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>To learn Spanish \u2013 didn\u2019t you know we speak Catalan?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Anyway, it\u2019s a good Spanish lesson, sort of.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Anne is studying her head off, she\u2019ll probably have it down by next week.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I am taking my time. Here is a photo I caught of an <a href=\"https:\/\/uhlfelder.com\/blog\/0059\/index.html\">affliction<\/a> here in BCN.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">For me, I&#8217;m at the point of the guy in this video:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Cl8FTdjNri4\" onclick=\"return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)\"><font color=\"#0000cc\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v<wbr><\/wbr>=Cl8FTdjNri4<\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<p><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><u>November 15, 2007<\/u>.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Off again to a different Starbucks this morning.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I like to cross the street once in a while; I had to go there after Anne insisted we try a Spanish place which had lousy food, was loud and too crowded.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We tried.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">I\u2019ve got a weight work-out I do with the minimum of stuff.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It will keep me in shape, more or less.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I am thinking of doing some running races since winter is traditionally the time I try to do them (cross-country skiing, uphilling).<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Since the only reasonable thing is running races, I did some research, read up on some Catalan websites and found a 10K running race in a couple of weeks.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The on-line race sign up in general is definitely not as smooth as in the <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">US<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> for the smallest race and this one had 2,800 participants last year.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I also told my running friend Kevin about it.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>He tried to sign up but they wanted his NIE number \u2013 that\u2019s the number you have if you are a citizen of an EC country like a social security number.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Basically, it\u2019s asked for frequently and you don\u2019t really have to give it out.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I just make up a number and give that one and it always works.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>In my mind it\u2019s very Orwellian, and only the Germans might be organized enough to do something with it.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>As for the Germans, as long as you don\u2019t mention the war, they don\u2019t care either.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><u>November 16, 2007<\/u>.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>After a Spanish class this morning, I went to sign up for the running race and then took David to his soccer game.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s gotten really cold here, about 40s or so.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>David scored the first goal and although they still lost, it was an exciting well-played game.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><u>November 17, 2007<\/u>.\u00a0 I have spent at least the last 24 hours trying to get this blog to work.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a huge hassle and certainly would have been much easier to use an off-the-shelf program that is supported.\u00a0 Why did I do it the hard way?\u00a0 Good question.\u00a0 I guess the main reason is I want it to be on uhlfelder.com and second is password protection (which is probably available on the other sites).\u00a0 This is sure to burn some time just trying to get everything to work correctly.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve tried to post all the material from the time we got here until now on the blog.\u00a0 You can receive comments from others so it&#8217;s similar to a forum.\u00a0\u00a0<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><o:p><\/o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><u>November 18, 2007<\/u>.\u00a0 David had a birthday party to go to today and I went to the park, after getting some coffee at Starbucks (why can&#8217;t anyone make a decent filtered coffee in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Spain<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>?).\u00a0 Joshua needed to eat (it was lunch time) so I sent him upstairs since I had the dog who probably needed to do his duty.\u00a0 In any case, after watching him get humped by every Tom, Harry and Dick, I let him off the leash and off he went, never to be seen again.\u00a0 Some Jessica who had a young, hung dog who was one of the humpers talked to me in Spanish, which is nice and eventually we captured the little varmants <strong><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt\">in flagrante delicto<\/span><\/strong>, almost.<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><o:p><\/o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><u>November 19, 2007.\u00a0<\/u> Class after coffee, more Spanish speaking (poorly), not having time to memorize the verb conjugations, etc&#8230; David to soccer, speaking Spanish (sort of) with soccer moms, cold, home, very good Indian food that Anne made, day&#8217;s end.\u00a0 <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><o:p><\/o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><u>November 20, 2007<\/u>.\u00a0 Anne has organized a language trade with Laura; we speak English for half an hour and she speaks Spanish for half an hour.\u00a0 She is very Catalan and told us something revealing about <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Spain<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> &#8212; she would be embarrassed to have a Spanish flag on her property; a Catalan flag is fine.\u00a0 It makes me realize that there is no Spanish nationalism.\u00a0 This of course goes to the language issue too &#8212; they want their children to learn and be taught in Catalan, a language spoken only within 100 miles of <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Barcelona<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.\u00a0 This seems more than impractical, it seems a problem in terms of integrating a country.\u00a0<u1:p>\u00a0<\/u1:p><\/font><u1:p><u1:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><u1:p><u1:p>Lots of calls with <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Aspen<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, including business and personal.\u00a0 I sent out an email reminding both of you about this blog.\u00a0 Hope you saw it.\u00a0 Greg Shaffran completed his bike trip and came through in the middle of the night to pick up his b<\/u1:p><\/u1:p><u1:p>ike case &#8212;
